Reduction By Sodium Borohydride/ Sodium Borohydride Reduction Mechanism
Sodium borohydride is a relatively selective reducing agent. Ethanolic solutions of sodium borohydride reduce aldehydes and ketones in the presence of epoxides, esters, lactones, acids, nitriles, or nitro groups. Reduction of aldehydes is straightforward.Sodium borohydride will reduce aldehydes to primary alcohols and ketones to secondary alcohols. This proceeds via a two-step mechanism consisting of 1) nucleophilic addition, followed by 2) protonation. Esters and amides are not reduced by NaBH4 under normal conditions.
